Keep Our Hospital in Norwich

Exhibition in Castle Mall June 1997

Michael Innes created 9 large posters of his drawings and ideas concerning the feasibility of redeveloping the present St Stephens site. He demonstrated that it was both feasible and desirable to do so.

The site could be redeveloped to a high architectural and aesthetic standard. The idea that it could not was as a result of a report by Povall Worthington commissioned by the Health Authority. They were asked to report on the suitability of the site for a 1,600 bed hospital. Their report concluded that it would be difficult to do this but that a 1,000 bed hospital could easily be accommodated on the site. This report is not in the public domain though the Eastern Evening News has interviewed the authors.

Using the footprint of the Colney proposals the exhibition showed how a similar or larger hospital could be built without disturbing clinical activity, without disturbing listed buildings, in a similar time span, at reduced cost, with 1,000 or more car park spaces and a pleasant open space garden in the centre.

Michael Innes' posters were displayed in the Castle Mall for two or three weeks during the summer of 1997. They were the cause of much interest from passers by, both city and county residents. Comment was overwhelmingly supportive of the theme of the exhibition and critical of the protagonists of Colney, particularly of the perceived undemocratic nature of the decision making.

A visitor's book was provided and many visitors wrote their comments. These comments can be found elsewhere on this web site .

There is no evidence that anyone in authority took any notice at all.

The Exhibition has also been on display at Yarmouth Public Library. There were no facilities for a visitor's book here. The Thorpe Road surgery of Dr Trevor Plunkett has also had the exhibiton on display in their waiting room.
